Sustainable tiles for Imagine Luxury SPA

Sustainable tiles for Imagine Luxury SPA

The Quy Mill Hotel were proud to open the doors to their new luxury, Imagine Spa and treatment facility, constructed with sustainable products, and Bedrock are pleased to have been a part of the overall scheme.

Bedrock Tiles clients, a Cambridge based design practice had worked on the project from the outset with a strong vision for they wanted to achieve. The clients wanted a luxurious Spa where their clients could enjoy a warm and inviting experience. For example, the colours in the different rooms were individually designed to work with the furniture and styles to give the Spa a variety of settings for the visitors to experience. The thought behind this was that they offer Spa break packages that contain multiple treatments in the same room but each with the right ambiance give their clients the best experience.

One of the most interesting considerations with the Spa and the design ethic was the need for it to offer a high level of sustainability. The work achieved by Bedrock Tiles went a long way in helping them achieve this. For example, each of the sustainable tile ranges supplied by Bedrock had their own unique ECO qualities. The large format tiles were supplied in a 3mm thickness, boasting 70% less material than a regular sized porcelain tile. This is a product often overlooked because there isn't a lot of knowledge around the product with it being a relatively new innovation. At Bedrock Tiles we have worked with thin porcelain tiles since they was created and found them to be very stable in the right environment.

Then the wall and floor tiles came from three different ranges accredited with Eco-Label, a European environmental certificate. The mosaics used were made from glass which is always a fully recycled material, which in hindsight as the project was completely sustainable from the tiling aspect. The floor in the ellipse reception of the Spa was a custom design that we had waterjet cut ahead of the tiles being laid to create symmetry with the lighting above. This is a great example of how using the right techniques can really enhance a project.

We are pleased that this project was delivered efficiently, on time and in budget due to the level of technical experience and information we were able to offer during the design stages. Our clients were therefore eliminating any challenges that may have arisen should there have been no consideration and often overlooked such as drainage, movement joints, grout and adhesive, large and new methods of fixing them. If these issues aren't addressed properly then it would lead to failure in the future life of the building.

The requirement for sustainability on this project was also key and from having a long standing interest in keeping current with the latest, affordable and most innovatively sustainable floor and wall tiles set us in the best steed to achieve and surpass our client’s expectations. This could be achieved by understanding what tiles conform to the strict regulations set out by HSE and remain sustainable.
