Sika-Trocal brings historic town hall into 21st century

At Burton Town Hall in East Staffordshire, over 700m2 of Sika-Trocal SGK waterproofing membrane has been installed across a series of failing flat roofs by licensed contractor J. Wright Roofing Ltd, as part of the regeneration programme to bring the historic building into the 21st century.

Originally built in 1894, the Town Hall has since been extended twice to incorporate civic and council office space. With a number of these flat roofs failing to discharge water and with the existing asphalt and felt at the end of their existing lifespan, Brownhill Hayward Brown Architects turned to Sika-Trocal for a cost-effective, hassle-free application that also included revising the falls of the roofs to efficiently shed water.

Installed by Nottingham-based J. Wright Roofing Ltd, the 1.5mm thick Sika-Trocal SGK membrane was adhered using Sika-Trocal C 300 PU adhesive. The existing roof deck was in good enough condition to remain insitu, ensuring a watertight roof throughout the installation. Applied on a multitude of roofs on several levels, the application of a fully adhered membrane resulted in minimal fixings into the existing structure and was supplied with a 20 year warranty to meet the client’s requirements.

“During the modernisation of Burton Town Hall, it was discovered that a number of the building’s flat roofs required re-covering,” said Kevin Mosson, Flat Roofs Contracts Manager of J. Wright Roofing Ltd. “With long lasting performance and cost-effectiveness crucial, our application of Sika-Trocal SGK ensured the architect and client were very pleased.”

Suitable for both new build and refurbishment applications, in both warm roof and cold roof construction, Sika-Trocal SGK is the best-cost performance bonded membrane for use on all types of substrates. Offering excellent flexibility and high resistance to ageing and weathering, Sika-Trocal SGK ensured a long-lasting, low maintenance roof covering.

The fully-adhered Type SGK roofing membrane is also approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to have a life expectancy in excess of 30 years. With the roof application completed in March 2015, the installation of the Sika-Trocal single ply membrane has ensured the heritage building, its workers and visitors will remain protected from the elements for many years to come.
